Blue did pretty good but ran too fast for the conditions. Still hot and dry and the grass is thick. After he got too close to the first birds he figured it out and hunted with due caution, still getting out there but was careful. I expected it, his favorite place to hunt. He seemed proud to get a bird in his mouth.

Congrats on getting out there and bringing home the first bird of the year. Looks like Blue is a good retriever, love it! I hope you have a good season now that the weather seems to be turning cooler with moisture.

Thanks, it was fun. Yes Blue likes to fetch. He got some good practice on cripples last year, my shooting is not great. It’s fun watching him bring in those sharptail, flapping and leaving a halo of feathers around his head. Late season ST have a lot of feathers!!

Cripples do seem to make retrieving more exciting for the dogs. Well, except for pheasants, those guys can give dogs a hard time if lightly wounded. But everyone will drop crippled birds and it simply highlights how important the retrieving trait is.

Susan, sounds like a great start to the 2018 season. Here we are about 3 weeks behind you. Our ruffed grouse season in the northern part of NY may open on 9/20, but as in most years, it’s much too warm and humid to do much. The rank, green coverts are hard on a dog. In September, this means get a couple early morning hours of scouting before its time to put the dogs up and do something else. Okay, that means I am jealous for your early season opportunities!
