Here is an interesting thing to look for while hunting this season, especially if you use a gps collar. According to a study some dogs use the earth’s magnetic field to navigate.

A video and map in this article on the study shows how a hunting dog might find it’s way back to you. It’s easier to figure out what they’re talking about if you read the above article first.

Probably very similar to the Woodcock migration abilities.

I definitely have seen the dogs backtrack, but some are especially good at coming back across in the right vicinity ahead of you after having been out of sight for a bit. I have thought they just have a good sense for the direction you’re going and how fast. It would be interesting to see if any of them do the 65 ft north-south run before coming around.

Neat stuff. I was going to reference the study on foxes (apparently) using magnetic information in hunting mice, but I see its already referenced in what Lisa posted.

This morning I saw a new friend drive by and he stopped to chat. He raises setters about 15 miles from me. We knew of each other, but really got connected when one of his setters was spotted running the roadside near the farm we own. That dog  had escaped his property, which he had recently moved to. We spent a day looking for the dog after it was spotted but never caught up to it. It showed up at home 4 days later. Was it geomagnetically referencing the whole time it was on the run?  Okay, its easy to romanticize the idea of some bigger thing we don’t understand,  but also one has to ask what is the real possibility and how does someone prove it?
